Real, Unposed, and Yours: How to Make Family Photos Actually Fun (and Not Totally Awkward)

Let’s be real… when most people think “family photos,” they imagine forced smiles, awkward poses, and the chaos of trying to get everyone dressed and cooperating. No wonder it keeps getting pushed off the to-do list. If you've ever said, “We should really get family photos sometime,” then bailed because it felt like a hassle… this is for you.

I’m now offering family portrait sessions, and I want to share a few things that can make your next shoot actually fun, easy, and 100% you.

1. Don’t force the poses — embrace the chaos
The best photos happen in the in-between moments: your kid mid-laugh, you brushing hair out of someone’s eyes, the messiness that actually feels like family. The more relaxed you are, the more real the photos will feel. Trust me — I’ve seen magic happen during snack breaks and tantrum pauses.

2. Wear something that feels like you
Matching outfits are cute, but you don’t have to look like a magazine ad. If your kid lives in dinosaur jammies or your teen won’t take off their hoodie — let them be. Comfort and authenticity > perfection.

3. Choose a spot that means something
Your backyard. A spot you always go for walks. Even your living room with toys scattered around. The location sets the mood — and the more it feels like your life, the more you’ll love looking back on it.

4. Let go of “perfect”
Perfection is overrated. The goal isn't to look flawless — it’s to capture a moment in time with the people you love most. Laugh, move around, be goofy. Let your photographer (hi, that’s me) worry about the rest.

Why Now?

I’ve spent years capturing couples, weddings, even solo portraits — and I still love every second of that — but lately, it’s the everyday family moments that have been hitting me the hardest. The mess, the hugs, the unfiltered chaos... it’s real, and it’s worth remembering just as much as the big, dressed-up days.

So this summer, I’m opening the door to family sessions. No pressure… just honest moments with the people who matter most. I’m keeping these limited so each one can feel relaxed, intentional, and completely yours. You don’t need a fancy occasion or a holiday card to get in front of the lens. You just need your people.

Ready when you are.
